Native Hawaiian

Hawaiian language, the indigenous people of Hawaii.

It belongs to the Polynesian group of Austronesian language family. Is closely related languages: Rarotongan, Tuamotu, Maori and tahitańskim, more distant relationship combines it with samoańskim, Fiji and other languages used in Polynesia. Shows a weaker relationship with the Malayo-Polynesian languages of Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.

The Hawaiian language is the language wymierającym. Since 1900 the number of users of Hawaiian, for which it is the native language has fallen from 37,000 to 1,000, half of the members is aged at least 70 years.

On most Hawaiian islands has been replaced in the English language and is widely used as the language of everyday use. Is an exception because of its isolation (intended) from the influences of civilization, the island of Niihau.

The Hawaiian language is characterized by a very small number of phonemes – polinezyjscy like his relatives. It has only 8 consonants and 5 vowels. Particularly interesting is no phoneme / t / – a few shows a lack of language. Hawaiian form a set of consonant phonemes: / p /, / k /, /? / (Glottal stop, Hawaiian ‘Okina, written as a single opening apostrophe’), / m /, / n /, / w /, / v /, / l /, / b / and the vowels: / a /, / e /, / i /, / o /, / u /. Phonemes / v / and / w / are written by the same letter ‘w’ (Hawaiian alphabet). It is pronounced as / w / only at the beginning of a word.

After each consonant vowel always occurs together forming two-letter syllable. Vowels in accented syllables are pronounced longer, in a letter marked Macro. Vowels may occur in pairs or even triplets (eg, luau – the traditional Hawaiian feast).

Grammatical categories are primarily expressed in words, prefixes and posiłkowymi. Verb distinguish only Time passed and nieprzeszły. Hawaiian is also one of the languages in which 1 person plural. and double the number of personal pronouns distinguish according to whether “we” embrace the speaker or not, ie kaakou – ‘we, together with you’, maakou – ‘we, but without you’.

From Hawaii and the Hawaiian language is associated, not without reason, aloha, the most common greeting among the inhabitants of the islands (also used as a farewell). Further the importance of this romantic love, affection, or simply the best wishes.

The second utility in daily contact that is the word mahalo is thank you.

Word of Hawaii in the Hawaiian language (in the record of Hawai’i) is pronounced / havaiʔi /, but the Americans, moving from English usage, pronounced / hawaiʔi / (in English reads Hawaii / ha ‘waii /).

Note: Wiki in Hawaiian means quick in a hurry, so the wiki wiki will mean very soon, as for example in the name of the company ‘Wiki Wiki Messenger Service’ (a very fast courier services)
